Pakistan - Belgium Business Forum (PBBF) held the 14th Annual General Meeting on 12 February 2011. Along with the AGM PBBF hosted an interaction/networking event in an informal friendly environment to discuss matters of mutual interest with senior officials of public and private entities.

Mr. Ahshan Ullah Khan gave a presentation on "UN Global Compact" which is basically a voluntary effort for businesses to subscribe to 10 principles covering labor rights, environment, human rights, anti-corruption, etc.

Mr. Mir Hussain Ali (Secretary Environment & Alternative Energy, Government of Sindh) spoke about the challenges facing the government in ensuring environmental compliance. He stated that under the 18th amendment the environmental protection laws and would be under provincial authority. He urged business associations like PBBF to give their input in this matter.

Mr.Afsar Din Talpur Director General (P&D), PQA gave details of industrial land in Port Qasim Authority and stated that investors could be assured of complete security.

Mr. Malik Subah Sadiq Deputy Director, FIA explained the role of the organization for immigration issues.

Dr. Ishrat Hussain Dean & Director, Institute of Business Administration stated that there should be more devolution of authority and resources to lower tiers of government which will ensure more efficient utilization of resources.

To a question on the Freedom of Information legislation he stated that it could be a powerful tool for transparency but unfortunately the current laws were weak and there were no reprimand clauses for government officials who ignored FOI requests from citizens.

To a another question Dr. Ishrat Hussain spoke about the changes he has bought in the IBA.. His goal is to make IBA in one of the top 100 ranking universities in the world.

Mr. Sameer Hamid Dodhy (President PBBF) thanked the members and the august guests for joining the session. He reiterated that the ongoing objectives of PBBF are to encourage and promote business ties, mutual understanding and friendly relations between the business communities of the two countries.
